Introducing harpist and composer Lucie Hendry
Lucie Hendry is a lever harpist from northeast Scotland, whose music bridges the rich traditions of Scottish folk with the innovative sounds of the Nordic music scene. Drawing inspiration from her folk roots, the natural world, and a broad spectrum of music genres, Lucie crafts a sound that is both refreshing and evocative.
As a harpist, pianist and composer, Lucie discovered her passion for traditional music at an early age and has since cultivated a fresh and sensitive style that encapsulates the essence of a progressing tradition in a modern, contemporary culture. While her musical interests have always been broad, it was the beauty, exhilaration and driving nature of traditional music that swayed her to pursue her musical studies first at Plockton’s National Centre of Excellence in Traditional Music then at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland where she graduated with a first-class honours degree in traditional music.
During the course of her studies, Lucie has had the privilege of performing in a variety of festivals including Glasgow’s Celtic Connections, Cape Breton’s Celtic Colours Festival, Cambridge Folk Festival and the Fringe. She has also toured the country several times through the Fèisean organisation with trails including the Commonwealth Ceilidh Trail. Lucie frequently performs at Edinburgh Castle for government receptions and has also had the privilege of performing in the presence of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at Holyrood Palace. Lucie strives to find innovative, exciting and beautiful ways to express her music, and she particularly enjoys bringing old tune melodies to life on the clà rsach so many people can enjoy the gems of our wonderful and rich culture. She is passionate about sharing this music with people: music that reaches out and connects with a person both on the surface as well as on an emotional level.
Lucie Hendry Trio
Lucie leads a dynamic trio featuring Scottish guitarist Chris Amer and Danish drummer Christoffer Skovhus. Together, they combine their distinctive styles with Lucie’s original compositions, creating a captivating blend of tradition and modernity.
In June 2023, Lucie released her debut solo album, Land of Eden. The nature-themed album has received widespread acclaim and national airplay in both Denmark and the United Kingdom, leading the trio to perform at major festivals across both countries such as Celtic Connections, Stonehaven Folk Festival, Godtfolk, Copenhagen and Aarhus Jazz Festival.
With a growing reputation in the global harp community, Lucie was a finalist in BBC Radio Scotland’s Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2021 and was nominated for ‘Up and Coming Artist of the Year’ at the 2023 Scots Trad Music Awards. Her innovative approach to the lever harp and commitment to cross- cultural collaboration have established her as a unique voice on the international music scene.
